Annual Parish Meeting
Annual Report 2009

  1. During the course of the year there have been changes to members of the Parish Council. We were pleased to welcome David Dempsey who replaced Yvonne Brookes and also Kath Bryan who unfortunately had to step down subsequently.

  1. As in previous years there has been continuing maintenance of the Riverside through coppicing of trees and control of natural vegetation. Chippings from the coppicing have again been put to good use, overlaid on the paths to improve conditions. The Parish Council is currently commissioning a study to identify the best way to manage the Riverside in the future.

  1. New trees have been planted in St Paul’s Drive to replace those damaged in the mini tornado of 2006. Other work to tidy up areas of the village has included completion of the Jetties project and repairs of the kerbs at the West End. Additional litter and “dog litter bins” have been requested from Richmondshire District Council for various parts of the village.

  1. The Parish Council has continued to play a leading role in the Iron Bridge Project. Unfortunately progress has been halted. North Yorkshire has expressed concern about the state of the Iron Bridge and likely future repairs. It has recommended the construction of a new bridge for which a feasibility study is to commence shortly. A great deal of progress is being made with the provision of off-road pathways to and from Richmond on either side of the bridge such that the river crossing is now likely to be the last aspect of the project to be completed.

  1. There were a number of adverse comments about the tidiness of the cemetery during last year. The justifiable criticisms pointed to a need for better and more comprehensive maintenance and as a consequence the Parish Council has drawn up a new contract for maintenance and made arrangements to improve the path to the War Memorial.

  1. Brompton on Swale Primary School celebrated its 25th year on its current site in 2008 and the Parish Council was pleased to be a sponsor of part of the celebratory project to provide better recreational and sporting facilities.

  1. Changes to the Service 34 bus were made during the year. These resulted in the institution of an X34 service providing three journeys to Darlington from the village each day and a regular service to Catterick and the Garrison from Gatherley Road. The Parish Council supported demands for an additional school time journey from Darlington and the diversion of the service on to Bridge Road, both of which have been introduced.

  1. The Parish Council is now permitted to support micro generation schemes for public buildings and is currently discussing with the Village Society ways in which they could contribute to improved provision of power for the Community Sports Hall.

  1. North Yorkshire County Council has acquired a speed matrix sign which will be placed for short periods in different sites in the county. It has already been used in Bridge Road and the Parish Council has notified the County Council of further locations for siting the matrix as a means to cutting vehicle speeds and improving safety.

  1. As in previous years the Parish Council has reviewed and updated the Parish Plan which outlines future proposals and projects. We would welcome suggestions from any member of the village of any changes or improvements that they would like to see so that they can be considered for future projects.
